Magic…

Lately I’ve come across quotes about magic, order and chaos from several sources. When a trend like this develops for me, I feel that it’s the universe’s way of capturing my attention, and I’m then tasked with figuring out what the relationship is and how the resulting information is supposed to fit into my life!

One source is from one of my very chunky esoteric philosophy books, one is from a very chunky Jordan B. Peterson book, and the other is from the not-really-chunky-but-got-some-game series, ‘The Witcher,’ on Netflix. (I use the words “chunky” or “depthy” to say that something is “deep” and may need a little extra time for its meaning to sink in!)

I found my philosophy book quotes awhile ago (though I neglected to write down the title of the book) when I was cleaning through my office. I immediately moved them out of the stack of papers they were in to my desk for safe keeping, knowing that more on the topic would reveal itself in time. Here you go…

God is the universal mind diffused through all things.

ether = mind
chaos = matter
From the union of these two springs into existence the universe.

Magic is spiritual wisdom; nature is the material ally, pupil and servant of the magician.

Here’s what Jordan Peterson has to say about chaos and order in his book 12 RULES FOR LIFE: An Antidote to Chaos...

Meaning is the ultimate balance between, on the one hand, the chaos of transformation and possibility and on the other, the discipline of pristine order that will be even more immaculate, and capable of bringing forth a still more balanced and productive chaos and order.

He also reminds us…

At the beginning of time, according to the great Western tradition, the Word of God transformed chaos into Being through the act of speech. It is axiomatic, within that tradition, that man and woman alike are made in the image of that God. We also transform chaos into Being, through speech. We transform the manifold possibilities of the future into the actualities of past and present.

Now, most recently while rewatching ‘The Witcher,’ this line by the character Tissaia de Vries hurled itself at me as a way to finish off the trifecta of cosmic clues…

Magic is organizing chaos. And while oceans of mystery remain, we have deduced that this requires two things. Balance and control. Without them, chaos will kill you.

(Note: I really had to ignore the chaos of this show’s left-for-you-to-figure-out timelines in order to enjoy it. It’s got some really great one-liners, though.)

Pretty depthy, right?

My take on this right now is that we are creators via our thoughts, words and deeds. When we wield the magic wand, so to speak, we have the ability to forge something out of nothing. The void’s womb of potential and possibility is always there, supplying a blank canvas for the expression of what’s inside of us, whether that relates to our own creations or to what others have created around us. However we may be challenged by the chaos in our lives, it our responsibility to learn to manage it with balance and control (wisdom) so that we are not consumed by it.
